TAIWAN’S CHAN Shih-chang lifted his maiden Asian Tour title when he won the US$750,000 King’s Cup, presented by PTT, at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club in Pattaya with a two-stroke victory over countryman Lin Wen-tang yesterday.

The 30-year-old from Hsinchu shot six birdies against three bogeys for a 67 and a four-day total of 12-under-par 268 for his biggest career win. Chan also ended the domination of Thais, who won the past four editions.

“At the start of the round I was feeling very nervous as the gap was very close between me and others. But I told myself not to look at the leaderboard and tried to play well. I’m happy I managed to do that today,” said Chan, who won the US$135,000 top prize money.

“It’s amazing to win my first Asian Tour title. I still can’t believe it,” said the winner of five Asian Development Tour titles.

Overnight leader Chan, in fact, fought a neck-and-neck battle with Britain’s Eddie Pepperell, who started the day a stroke behind, as they were tied at 12-under after 14 holes. But the 25-year-old man from Abingdon missed a two-foot par putt on the 15th hole, lost momentum and never recovered. He committed a double bogey and back-to-back bogeys to finish with a 71. It made Chan’s path to title comfortable.

“I knew I had to hit the fairways as the greens here were very small and tricky. But it was very close until the 16th hole. I started feeling I could win [with Pepperell double bogeying that hole]. And when I started making putts from then on I knew I could win,” said Chan, the second Taiwanese champion since Chan Yih-shin who won the inaugural edition in Khon Kaen in 2009

Lin, winner of six Asian Tour titles, carded a 66 for a total 10-under 270, which earned him the runner-up prize money of US$82,500.

Local young gun Danthai Boonthai carded a 64 to finish as the best local player at joint third with a total 9-under 271. Danthai, after 14 holes, was in joint lead with 10-under along with Chan, who bogeyed the challenging ninth hole and Pepperell, who parred the hole. But a bogey on the 16th interrupted Danthai’s charge as he managed only pars from then on.

“Had I managed to save par on the 16th, I would have given myself a better chance,” said 20-year-old Danthai. “But overall I’m happy with the score. I didn’t expect to finish at this position,” added Danai, who will next enter an All Thailand Golf Tour event in Chiang Mai next week.

“I expected too much of myself at the beginning of the year and didn’t play well. So I just want to have fun for the rest of the season,” said Danthai, whose position was shared by Mark Foster of England, who shot a 69. A stroke behind at lone fifth was Lionel Weber of France after a total of 272.

Chinarat Phadungsil hit a 66 to sign off at joint sixth with a total of 273. This is his first top 10 finish on the Asian Tour since a tied third position in the Philippines Open last year.

“I didn’t start well in the final round by bogeying on the third hole. But I putted well from then on, especially on the back nine where I had three birdies,” said Chinnarat, whose shared the sixth position with Denmark’s Victor Osterby, Sweden’s Pelle Edberg and Pepperell.

Thitipun Chuayprakrong carded a 67 for 6-under 274 to take tied 10th position along with Filipino rising star Miguel Tabuena, 200

6 and 2008 Asian Tour No 1 Jeev Milkha Singh of India and American Jason Knutzon.

Meanwhile, the tournament will be held in March next year with around US$100,000-200,000 prize money increase.
